Children and Adolescent Physical Rehabilitation Services

Children and Adolescent Rehab, WakeMed

WakeMed Rehab acknowledges and addresses the special needs of children and adolescent patients.

WakeMed Rehab is committed to facilitating family involvement in the treatment, assessment, and continued care planning for all children and adolescent patients.

The special needs of children and adolescent patients and their families will be identified as part of the interdisciplinary assessment process and addressed in the individualized treatment plan.

All WakeMed Rehab policies and procedures regarding individualized assessment, team treatment, and continued care planning apply to children and adolescent patients with special emphasis on involving the family in this process.

Modifications to the physical environment/treatment space will be made and special equipment, furniture and/or materials needed will be obtained to provide an environment that facilitates program participation and physical comfort.

The developmental and social needs of children and adolescent patients will be addressed in individual, family and group treatment activities, and will include special emphasis on leisure/diversionary activities and peer interaction when possible.

The unique developmental and psychosocial needs of children and adolescents and their families and peers are recognized and addressed by the Rehabilitation Team in individual programming and schedules.

Specific coping/adjustment issues as well as education and information related to disability and/or activity limitations will be addressed through individual, group and/or family therapy/education offered by the departments of Clinical Case Management, Neuropsychology, and/or Chaplain Services. These services will also be provided as appropriate to siblings and peers.

Children and adolescents receive comprehensive, continued care planning designed to address their physical, emotional, developmental, educational, and medical/rehabilitative needs.

The rehab physicians and treatment team will involve, as approved by the patient's family, the Pediatric Hospitalist, the patients primary pediatrician and/or family practitioner in the ongoing and post discharge program planning.

Personnel who serve children/adolescents will receive training opportunities, demonstrate competencies/skills and have experience in children/adolescent services.
