Nurse Extern Applicants

WakeMed's Nurse Externship program is a 10-week paid program for students preparing for their senior year in an accredited nursing program. WakeMed externs are partnered with experienced nurse preceptors to help develop valuable nursing skills in a supportive and nurturing team environment.

This unique program helps nursing students navigate the hospital environment, and gain a wealth of skills and experience to prepare for a future career in nursing. The 32-36 hour paid work week combines orientation activities, continuing education classes, and CNA skills. The program runs each year from May through July.

Program Objectives

As a WakeMed Nurse Extern, you will:

  • Partner with registered nurse preceptors in a supportive, nurturing environment
  • Develop technical skills in delivering patient care
  • Utilize critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrate competence in theory application
  • Collaborate as a participating partner with members of the health care team
  • Experience nursing in a hands-on environment

Program Elements

As a WakeMed Nurse Extern, you will have dedicated nurse preceptor(s) and participate in the following activities:

  • Nurse Extern Orientation Program
  • Two 4-5 week rotations on two different units within the WakeMed system
  • Shift rotations (various hours and days)
  • Two days of continuing education
  • 32-36 hours per week for ten weeks

Program Requirements

To be eligible for the WakeMed Nurse Externship Program, you must:

  • Be a rising senior in an accredited nursing program
  • Be listed as both a NAI and NAII in the state of North Carolina at the start of the program
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Have a strong desire to learn and a serious commitment to patient safety and quality
  • Be available to work the schedule of assigned nurse preceptor (may be days, nights, weekends)

The Nurse Externship Program is sponsored by the Nursing Education department and is coordinated by a Nursing Resource Specialist with experience in nurse development.

How Do I Apply?

Please apply online to the Nurse Extern - Summer 2010 position.  Online applications will be accepted November 5, 2009 - January 15, 2010.  All required documentation must be submitted on or before January 29, 2010.  Early application & submission of required materials is encouraged.

You must submit three (3) Nurse Extern WakeMed reference forms completed by a Nursing Clinical Instructor & an official copy (issued by your school's Registrar) of your most recent transcript.
