Pacing Yourself After a Hospital Stay

Some symptoms experienced after an extended hospital stay include feeling especially tired and weak, are due not only from your illness or procedure, but from inactivity. Gradual increases in physical activity will restore your energy and strength. In most cases, restrictions are temporary. As you recover:

  • Do not allow yourself to become tired or attempt activities when you are tired.
  • See friends, but for short visits and in small numbers.
  • Pace yourself. Allow time for rest.
  • Space your chores through the day.
  • Alternate hard jobs with easy ones.
  • Don't rush any activity. Take your time.
  • Get six to eight hours of sleep each night.
  • Rest 15-30 minutes twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. You may need to rest after meals.
  • Plan some activity each day to vary your routine. Now may be the time to indulge in a good book or a new hobby.
  • Plan activities that do not require standing for long periods of time.
