The Raleigh Campus is the first certified primary stroke center and Level I Trauma Center in Wake County. It has 515 acute beds and 84 rehab beds and provides acute and intensive care to both adult and pediatric patients, as well as other services such as adult and pediatric emergency care, rehabilitation services, same-day surgery, and outpatient services.

Other services and locations of the WakeMed system includes a full-service hospital in Cary, outpatient and skilled nursing facilities at the Fuquay-Varina and Zebulon/Wendell campuses, and stand alone emergency departments at North and Apex Healthplexes.

WakeMed has implemented bedside barcode scanning for medications and is in the final stages of CPOE and smart pump implementation.

About WakeMed Pharmacy Services

The Department of Pharmacy at Raleigh Campus provides services to all inpatient areas, the Emergency Department, and various clinics 24 hours a day.

One satellite pharmacy, located in the proximity of the critical care units, and the other satellite pharmacy in the new pediatric tower, provides expedited service for patients with urgent needs, while the outpatient pharmacy provides services to clinic and discharged patients.

The department embraces a decentralized model in which pharmacists are stationed in patient care areas throughout the hospital to provide the best pharmacy services to patients and other health care providers.

In addition to order entry, the pharmacists also perform anticoagulation monitoring, pharmacokinetics monitoring and dosing, patient profile reviews, and warfarin discharge counseling. Pharmacists in the main pharmacy prepare sterile products, dispense medications, and maintain pharmacy operations.

Clinical pharmacy specialists practice in multiple areas including internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, rehabilitation and critical care. The department currently has over 140 staff members including pharmacists, specialists, technicians, and supporting staff.

We are currently affiliated with and provide rotations for students from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.
