WakeMed Cary Hospital's Imaging Services providers now offer breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to improve the search for malignancies.
The American Cancer Society now recommends an annual MRI - in addition to a mammogram - for women who have a 20 percent or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer. The technology's ability to provide sharper soft tissue contrast than radiation-based equipment is the primary reason it is becoming a first-line screening tool for breast cancer.
About the Test
Breast MRI's are always bilateral, even if the patient has had a mastectomy. MRI contrast is given, and an IV is necessary. Patients will need to be able to lie on their stomachs in a breast coil for 30 minutes. Men are not being scanned at this time.
Is Breast MRI Covered by my Insurance?
Every insurance plan is unique and will need to be contacted before breast MRI is performed. Due to the specificity of insurances, every breast MRI may not be covered by all insurance plans. Even if the insurance does not need an authorization number, they may not cover the breast MRI without the proper prescreening for indicators of high risk patients.
