WakeMed Health & Hospitals is the only certified primary stroke center in Wake County. As a certified stroke center, WakeMed has proven that it provides quality care to stroke patients and follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.
This expertise has benefitted more than 1,700 patients since WakeMed Raleigh Campus and North Healthplex were originally certified as a primary stroke center in August 2006 by The Joint Commission, earning the Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for stroke care. In 2008, Raleigh Campus and North Healthplex were recertified as primary stroke centers. Cary Hospital and Apex Healthplex also met primary stroke center criteria in 2008.
Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation's third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.
Additionally, the Raleigh Campus, which cares for approximately 100 stroke patients every month, has been recognized with a silver award from the American Heart and Stroke Association for excellence in stroke care.
