Finding Your Way

We recognize that parking and wayfinding may be challenging for our patients and visitors throughout this process. Please pardon any inconvenience as we continue to improve our facilities. If you need any assistance, please look for a friendly face wearing a WakeMed badge and someone will be happy to help you find your way.

Questions or Concerns?

Thank you for your continued patience and support of WakeMed Health & Hospitals. We promise the challenges associated with construction will be well worth the wait as we bring you new and improved services and state-of-the-art facilities and technology.  Should you have any significant concerns or problems throughout the construction process, please contact the Raleigh Campus Administration office at 350-8109 or ext. 08109 from within the hospital.

Raleigh Campus Patient Tower

Construction on the new Raleigh Campus Patient Tower is quickly progressing.  Behind its many large windows, a talented team of construction workers, architects and engineers continues to be hard at work. And amidst steel beams, sawdust and piles of wood, the tower's wide hallways, spacious rooms, strategically placed nurses' stations and visitor common areas are already taking shape.

Extending from the Heart Center to the Health Park, the structure stands four floors above ground level and completely covers the former main entrance of the hospital. A covered walkway connecting the new parking deck to the ground floor of the tower will create easy and convenient access.

The area outside the former Rehab Hospital entrance and behind the new tower will soon become a landscaped courtyard, including a convenient path to the main hospital. The ground and first floors of the tower will also hold pathways to the hospital and to the rest of the tower, in addition to seating areas for visitors, restrooms and an information desk.

Strategic, State-of-the-Art Design

The second floor will hold 20 adult intensive care unit (ICU) beds for cardiac patients in addition to space for up to 20 more beds, should they be needed in the future.

These ICU rooms will be approximately 60 percent larger than the Raleigh Campus' current ICU rooms and will be organized differently. Each bed will be located in the middle of the room and fitted with latitude arms, or mechanical arms that reach around the bed and contain all necessary patient care mechanisms and utilities. This will eliminate the need for wires and cords.

The tower's third floor will hold 41 Medical/Surgical beds for cardiac patients, each room with a shower inside.

WakeMed Children's

The fourth floor of the new patient tower on the Raleigh Campus will be the home of WakeMed Children's - Wake County's first dedicated children's hospital. The new "hospital within a hospital" will house patient rooms, treatment areas and technology specifi cally designed with WakeMed's pediatric patients in mind.

The future WakeMed Children's Hospital will have 45 pediatric beds - eight pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds, 12 observation beds and 25 inpatient beds.

With 34,000 square feet of space, the new children's hospital will also feature an expanded Level IV Intensive Care Nursery (ICN), expanded surgical capabilities from new specialists, new pediatric subspecialties, a treatment room, family areas and playrooms. From this floor, direct access will be available to the fourth floor of the main hospital where the Women's Pavilion & Birthplace, nurseries and ICN are located.

Beyond the bricks and mortar of the fourth floor, at the heart of WakeMed Children's are the enhanced services and specialties to help our pediatric experts meet the needs of our area's growing pediatric population. Children deserve to receive the right care where they want it, when they need it. The new WakeMed Children's will help ensure these needs are met, today and tomorrow.

To make WakeMed Children's a reality, the WakeMed Foundation has launched the $20 million Just For Kids Kampaign. Because WakeMed receives no federal or state subsidies or county tax support, funds generated through this effort are critical to complete the project and ensure children in our area do not have to wait for services.

How can you help? Visit www.childrencantwait.org or call 919-350-7656 for more information about WakeMed Children's and the Just For Kids Kampaign.

This project represents a major contribution toward the health and well-being of our growing community, and we eagerly anticipate the first three floors to open in February 2010.  The 4th floor, the new home of WakeMed Children's, is set to open in early May 2010.
