WakeMed Honored with Two 2009 American Diabetes Association Awards

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 23, 2009) - WakeMed Children's Diabetes & Endocrinology was selected as a recipient of the 2009 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Provider of the Year Award. And, Kim Warlick, RN, Children's Diabetes & Endocrinology patient educator, was selected as a recipient of the 2009 ADA Cure Care Commitment Award. Both awards represent a strong dedication and commitment to excellence in caring and advocating for people with diabetes.

'We feel so privileged to receive these awards from the ADA, the most respected association in our field that is leading the fight against diabetes,' commented Debbe Langdon, RN, Asthma & Diabetes Programs manager. 'This recognition is a direct reflection of our staff's hard work and dedication to caring for, advocating for and educating our patients. It also represents yet another way patients and families can be assured they are receiving the best care possible at WakeMed.'

Specifically, the Provider of the Year Award is given to ADA Recognized Education Programs that exceed national standards for patient care and demonstrate excellence in the care they provide. Examples of such excellence include the WakeMed Children's Diabetes Clinic, providing care for children and adolescents with diabetes; ENERGIZE!, a grant-supported program designed to teach young people how to build lifelong, healthy attitudes about food and fitness; and Camp Challenge, a summer camp for children with diabetes and asthma that combines fun activities with education about proper self-care.

The Cure Care Commitment Award is given to an individual who makes significant strides in advocating for people affected by diabetes. Warlick was recognized for her advocacy in the school system and for the diabetes education she provides in places that provide child care. She developed a program that ensures school nurses are notified immediately when a child is diagnosed with diabetes, and she trains school nurses on caring for children with diabetes. Warlick also trains staff at local YMCAs, preschools, day care centers and after-school programs.

WakeMed has a history of being recognized by the ADA for excellence in patient care and advocacy as it relates to diabetes. Our Children's Diabetes program was selected as a 2006 ADA Provider of the Year, and our Pregnancy & Diabetes program was a recipient in 2007. This year, Warlick and staff from Children's Diabetes & Endocrinology will be honored at the ADA awards banquet in late February.
