Society of 1961 Appreciation Gala:  October 19, 2009 - George F. Will

To honor the history and tradition of WakeMed, which opened in 1961, the Society of 1961 was established to recognize donors who contribute at the $1,350 level or above on an annual basis.

Each year, the Foundation Board of Directors and WakeMed administration select a specific expansion project or an enhancement to a specific area of care for financial support from the Foundation's annual fund proceeds.

Through the years, the Foundation has been honored to host evenings with notable public figures, including First Lady Barbara Bush, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Tom Brokaw, Walter Cronkite, Cokie and Steve Roberts, Bob Newhart, Bob Costas, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Cal Ripken, Jr., Tim Russert, George Stephanopoulos and the late Christopher Reeve.

Society of 1961 Appreciation Gala:  $4.4 Million Raised for WakeMed Children's

Life can change in an instant.  No one knows this better than ABC news correspondent Bob Woodruff and his wife Lee.

Together, they shared their story about their family's journey after Mr. Woodruff's devastating attack in Iraq, during the annual Society of 1961 Appreciation Gala at North Ridge Country Club in November.   Thanks to Society of 1961 and additional donor generosity, WakeMed is embarking on its own journey to create bright futures for the growing number of children in Wake County.

During the gala, WakeMed Foundation Board Chair Thomas B. Oxholm announced that a record $4.4 million has been raised for the creation of the new WakeMed Children's.
